A first-year postgraduate student from Midnapore at Jadavpur University has lodged a complaint against a senior faculty member, alleging sexual harassment during an ongoing semester examination. The student, via an email to JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu, expressed fear of academic repercussions, prompting swift action from the university.

The accused professor, a former department head, stands accused of subjecting the student to discomfort during exams, including unwarranted frisking in front of male peers and forcing her to leave the exam hall prematurely. Additionally, the student implicated two final year male students who allegedly pressured her to comply with the faculty member's demands. Authorities, including the university's internal inquiry committee and external bodies like the UGC and state women's commission, have been alerted to the matter for investigation.

Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) General Secretary Partha Pratim Roy has commented on the allegations, expressing shock and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. While the accused professor remains unavailable for comment, concerns have been raised within the university regarding the integrity of exam invigilation. The incident underscores the importance of addressing allegations of sexual harassment promptly and impartially within educational institutions.
